Over the last decade, HIV has lost the reputation it once had as a death sentence. Those old ads featuring the grim reaper from the late 80's have become lost to the younger generation and HIV is now managed with medication to ensure quality and length of life.
Some say that has led to a cavalier approach to the virus and now HIV rates in Australia are statistically higher than they've been in 20 years.
But there’s a new drug that could change all that. A pre-exposure medication that’s up to 99% effective, compared by many as the contraceptive pill for HIV.
I produced this short feature in 2015 after following the controversies of PrEP in the US and wondered how a drug so revolutionary, had little coverage in Australia, particularly from those within the gay community - who would benefit the most. Ahead of the zeitgeist, I spoke to the medical community pioneering it’s inclusion in the PBS and a man who was already on the drug’s trial.
UPDATE: In 2018, it was announced that PrEP was finally included in the PBS slashing it’s cost from $10,000 down to $39.50 per month.
