Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022
#ArtDirection #MotionDesign #VFX
In 2022, I was contracted by the ABC to lead the art direction & overall broadcast look for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Opening Titles
The art direction of the broadcast look was inspired by the 2 things that I think are most pressing to the LGBTQIA+ community in 2022.
1) For the colour scheme, I wanted to give prominence to the pride progress flag and particularly spotlight the black & brown colours to acknowledge my fellow queers of colour ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 and MOST importantly the light pink, blue and white colours to spotlight the trans community. 🏳️⚧️
2) I feel that Pride has become way too pinkwashed by corporations looking to make money off our community. As a result, the core of what Mardi Gras is about has been lost. There are still so many marginalised sections of our community who now, more than ever, deserve our continued support to fight for their equality. I wanted to spotlight throughout the whole broadcast where the origins of Pride came from - that it's undeniably a protest for our visibility and equality. So, for every graphic I used beautiful archive footage featuring our queer elders that marched so defiantly, so proudly before us. I also wanted to make sure that through the footage selected we showed diversity in our history - through representation of queers of colour who've also marched in previous Mardi Gras parades.
